Creating a habit loop can help you to turn a positive action into a healthy, lifelong habit…Habits are created when a single conscious behavior is repeated over time, until it becomes automatic. These three steps below will help you consciously practice the habit loop. The more often you do this, the sooner it will become automatic. Here's how to get started:
1. Choose good behavior (an action) to convert it into a routine habit. This could be something like attending an exercise class after work twice a week.
2. Identify a cue to signal it's time to carry out that chosen action. A cue is a prompt to perform the behavior. It could be something such as a smell, a sight, an emotion or a set time. For example, you can schedule a reminder on your phone to leave work in time to attend the class.
3. Choose a reward that benefits you from doing the behavior. This should be something that helps encourage you to repeat the action. It could be watching your favorite show while on the treadmill or a cool refreshing drink you treat yourself to for hydration afterwards.
We all have the power within ourselves to change existing habits or create new habits. Understanding how our habits are formed will help you to turn your mindful eating, activity and behaviors into regular habits that benefit your daily life.
